COLLECTABLE SIGNS
As a collector for over three decades now, I have always enjoyed owning famous brand name signs.
I specialise in enamel signs from the last 50 years and am very proud to own an old enamel Michelin sign. I also have Shell and Coca-Cola enamel signs in my collection.
Gas and petrol signs are highly-ranked
Given that most of the brand names were associated with petrol companies,
there
is a lot of paraphernalia worldwide when it comes to gas and petroleum
company signs. Beautiful petrol dispensers from the 1920s
with glass cylinders are highly collectable on the international market.
New-age sign memorabilia with a collectable feel
Having owned and sold numerous collectable petrol pumps
from all over the world, I can appreciate the passion collectors
have for the objects of their desire. Walking through flea markets, one
sees numerous "new style" looks with a distinct collectable
memorabilia feel. These copycat products have a market of their own. One
finds that there are numerous sign and signage manufacturers
dealing with the motor industry,
manufacturing and distributing mascots to be mounted on cars.
Cadillacs become couches in furniture craze
Another interesting scenario is car furniture. This craze started in the 50s in the United States when enthusiasts took their favourite cars and turned them into furniture which were placed in their apartments, creating an unbelievable ambience. The back of a 1950 Cadillac upholstered into a couch with all its chrome bits makes a fantastic statement and is a highly collectable retro item.
Road names in signage
Directional or geographical signage like "Elvis Road" or "Carnaby Street" is very vogue and has had huge numbers sold throughout the world market. This all falls into the area of collectable signs.
