THE SYMBOL AND THE SIGN
When man or beast left a footprint in the muddy swamp, this served as an incidental sign that living beings had been there. But when Native Americans bent limbs of trees in their paths or arranged piles of stones a particular way, this was strategically-planned signage.
The language of symbols
As civilisation took root, symbols and inscriptions
made from wood and metal were hung outside stores, becoming a sign of
the wares or services available at those stores. They were put there to
communicate an idea.
Signs and symbols stand for something
by having or suggesting a relationship, interpretation, resemblance or
association with that something. A particular quality is revealed and
a message communicated in the process. Much of today’s written communication
can be traced back to specific symbols from the past.
Signs and symbols have thus always played a vital part in the communication of ideas. Throughout man’s history, the basic needs for sustenance, warmth, shelter, inspiration and direction have been successfully communicated in a variety of ways using signs and signage.
Symbols create associations
Symbols are ownerships. From an antique shop in the early 1900s with metal handcrafted signs, to a full digital high-resolution TV screening on the streets of present-day New York, symbols communicate a message of ownership.
